HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Happy Holidays to all, whatever your Holiday of choice, be it Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanza, Festivus, or something else meaningful to you.

In the spirit of the small, diverse planet on which we live, we offer this trivial fact.  O Holy Night, that most Christian poem, was composed not by a priest but by Placide Cappeau de Roquemaure, the Wine Commissioner of a small French town.  Not only that, but the musician who put it to music for Mr. Roquemaure, the unFrench-sounding Adolphe Charles Adams, was Jewish.

On the other hand, the most pious Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay colony enacted a law in 1659 that banned celebrating Christmas altogether.  They fervently believed it not to be “the true date of the Savior’s birth.”

So whatever you believe and wherever you may hail from, Happy Holidays to you, and much cheers and happiness in the coming year.
